Season of abstinence begins on February 13

Lent is the season of penance and prayer for Christians before Easter.

It will start in 2013 on Wednesday, February 13 and continue for 46 days until Saturday, March 30.  The six Sundays in Lent are not counted among the 40 days of Lent because each Sunday represents a “mini-Easter,” a celebration of Jesus’ victory over sin and death.

The sixth Sunday in Lent (March 24 this year), is commonly called Palm Sunday and marks the beginning of Holy Week.

Lenten traditions of abstinence are taken less seriously than in the past but many Mexicans follow the proactice of not eating fish on Fridays. Fishmongers look forward to this period of the year, as sales, and prices, tend to increase significantly.
