Garbage separation program begins Monday

Trash separation policies take effect in Chapala, Jocotepec and other lakeshore communities as of next Monday, March 12.

Listed below are guidelines for classifying and separating household and garden wastes.

Municipal authorities say it doesn’t matter how householders choose to store and package their refuse as long as it is separated into the three specified categories and set out for sanitation department pickup on the designated days.  The initial objective is for people to start distinguishing different types of wastes and break the habit of mixing everything together, even if they don’t immediately manage the process to perfection.

When in doubt, ponder the following: If it’s natural material that can be composted, it’s organic. If it’s manmade material that is apt for recycling, it’s inorganic. Otherwise, it goes for sanitary disposal. The use of color-coded trash containers, bags or tags to distinguish each category is considered helpful, but not obligatory.
