BAD news

Bucerias resident and art gallery/studio owner Floydilou Kerr says she is always amazed at the number of people she meets that have the perception that all “the action” for shopping and eating in Bucerias takes place in el centro, north of the arroyo, which runs east/west through the center of the town.

Her Bucerias studio/gallery is in the heart of a 16-block area running southward from the arroyo to the southern town limit.

She is working to brand this area as the Bucerias Art District (BAD)

Kerr describes BAD as a collaboration of owners of high quality shops, vacation rental properties, real estate companies, hotels, art galleries, restaurants and cafes, intermixed with private residences along Av. Lazaro Cardenas and Av. Francisco I. Madero between Av. Morelos and Av. Agustin Melgar.

Kerr views this startup project as the first phase of a broader project to expand the brand.

“BAD gives an identity to an area with beautification, promotion and signage, to encourage a longer and stronger business season,” she says.

Everything related to the BAD will be worded in Spanish and English.

The slogan of BAD is “Bucerias Art District - Shop/play/Dine/Stay.” Zona de Arte de Bucerias - Comprar, Jugar, Cenar, Quedar.”

“The idea is being overwhelmingly received,” Kerr, says. “I like to work fast, so I need  hands-on help from as many people as I can get.

“We are asking vacation rental property owners, shop owners and area residents to donate 200 pesos to go forward with our first beautification project and marketing signage on the highway.

“We also have a Facebook page where we have been promoting the district over the past two months. And it’s working. We will have a website in the next month allowing people to submit a blog post with photos to promote themselves.”

Kerr says the 200-peso donations can be made at Floydilou, Sone Galeria, Mestiza Boutique or Galeria Monarca.

She also needs people to post on the Facebook page and five volunteers with Spanish or French language skills to be page administrators.

Other volunteers are needed to take on Instagram for the district, collect money and four people to draw up a list of participating businesses in four categories: shop, play, dine, stay.

“My goal is to make the Bucerias Art District the most talked about area in the Bahia de Banderas,” Kerr says.

This performance will be a fund-raiser for Tercera Edad, a non-profit whose mission is to construct a full time assisted-living care home, providing quality of life for elderly Mexicans.

Tickets are 300 pesos, which includes an appetizer with a choice of a glass of wine, beer, soda or water. Beverages will be available for purchase during intermission.
