Grab Some Popcorn

The Democrats Abroad Weekly Film Series continues through April 6 at the International Friendship Club in downtown Puerto Vallarta, Libertad 105. The popular series features first-run films shown on Wednesdays at 7 p.m.

Here’s a look at the movies that will be playing in March and April:

March 9 – “Timbuktu” An unflinching exploration of life under radical Islamist rule, this film tells the story of a cattle herder and his family who reside in the dunes of Timbuktu and find their quiet lives abruptly disturbed.

March 16 – “Iron Jawed Angels” This movie tells the remarkable and little-known story of a group of passionate and dynamic young women, led by Alice Paul (Hilary Swank) and her friend Lucy Burns (Frances O’Connor), who put their lives on the line to fight for American women’s right to vote.

March 23 – “Calvary” A marvelous showcase for Brendan Gleeson, who plays a parish priest threatened with murder by an unseen person avenging pedophilia in the church.

March 30 – “La Dictadura Perfecta”  A hilarious satire about corruption in Mexico. Worried about his political future, Governor Vargas decides to clean his image and negotiates a billionaire secret agreement with the owners of a TV corporation.

April 6 – “Breach”  A feature documentary film that asks, “Have we learned enough from our past to save the last, great wild salmon runs on the planet?” The cinematography is spellbinding.

Tickets for the screenings are available for a donation of 60 pesos in advance and 70 pesos at the door. Doors open at 6 p.m. Refreshments will be available.
