The Big Screen

It’s Oscar time again. If you have not viewed any of the nominated movies, Democrats Abroad Mexico can assist. They are presenting seven films up for the award of Best Picture.

The venue is The Jazz Foundation, located on the second floor of Allende 116 overlooking the Malecón in downtown Puerto Vallarta. Doors hope to open 30 minutes before show time. Limited beverage service will be available.

Advance tickets can be purchased after 6 p.m. daily at The Jazz Foundation for a donation of 70 pesos. On screening days, tickets can be purchased at the door for 80 pesos. Seating is limited to 75 per showing. First come, first served.

Here is the list of movies, dates and times:

“Lion” - February 18, 6:30 p.m. and February 22, 2 p.m.

Directed by Garth Davis, based on the non-fiction book, “A Long Way Home” by Saroo Brierley. It depicts a man’s search for his birth family across a continent, with only decades-old memories to guide him. Dev Patel, Rooney Mara, David Wenham and Nicole Kidman.

“Arrival” - February 19, 2 p.m. and February 22, 6:30 p.m.

Science fiction epic directed by Denis Villeneuve, based on the short story, “Story of Your Life” by Ted Chiang. A smart tale of alien contact that boasts great visuals and performances. Amy Adams, Jeremy Renner and Forest Whitaker.

“Manchester by the Sea” - February 19, 6:30 p.m. and February 23, 2 p.m.

Poignant drama written and directed follows a man who looks after his teenage nephew after the boy’s father dies. Casey Affleck, Michelle Williams, Kyle Chandler, Gretchen Mol and Lucas Hedges. 

“La La Land” - February 20, 2 p.m. and February 23, 6:30 p.m.

A musical, romantic comedy-drama written and directed by Damien Chazelle about a musician and an aspiring actress who meet and fall in love in Los Angeles. Ryan Gosling and Emma Stone. 

“Moonlight” - February 20, 6:30 p.m. and February 24, 2 p.m.

Drama written and directed by Barry Jenkins, based on the play “In Moonlight Black Boys Look Blue” by Tarell Alvin McCraney. A portrait of contemporary African American life and an intensely personal and poetic meditation on identity, family, friendship and love. Trevante Rhodes, André Holland, Janelle Monáe, Ashton Sanders, Jharrel Jerome, Naomie Harris and Mahershala Ali.

“Fences” - February 21, 2 p.m. and February 25, 6:30 p.m.

Drama  directed by Denzel Washington, based on August Wilson’s Pulitzer Prize-winning play of the same name. Tells the story of Troy Maxson, a mid-century Pittsburgh sanitation worker who once dreamed of a baseball career, but was too old when the major leagues began admitting black players. Denzel Washington, Viola Davis, Stephen Henderson, Jovan Adepo, Russell Hornsby, Mykelti Williamson and Saniyya Sidney.

“Hidden Figures” - February 21, 6:30 p.m. and February 25, 2 p.m.

A biographical drama directed by Theodore Melfi, based on the non-fiction book of the same name by Margot Lee Shetterly, about female African-American mathematicians at NASA. Taraji P. Henson, Octavia Spencer and Janelle Monáe.

Bi-cultural Blast

Mariachis, Margaritas and More takes place Thursday, February 23, from 6 to 11 p.m. at Club de Leones, Francisco Madero 280 in Old Town Puerto Vallarta. It is sponsored by the Amapas Neighborhood Association (ANA) and the Viejo Vallarta Association, two organizations that are building bridges, not walls. They work within their colonias to make improvements and beautify the area. 

Tickets are 500 pesos at the door, 400 pesos for Mexican nationals and ANA members.  Drinks are not included. Advance tickets available at the ANA office, Rodolfo Gomez 111/3, in Hotel San Marino. There is also non-stop entertainment featuring an amazing mariachi band and folkloric dancing. Act II Stages star Brittany Kingery will be performing classics from the Linda Ronstadt songbook, celebrating her Mexican roots.

This is a truly bilingual, bicultural celebration and a chance to rub shoulders with not only friends, but our local Mexican neighbors.

New Flight Arrives

A new scheduled Southwest Airlines flight from Oakland, California touched down at the Puerto Vallarta airport Sunday, February 12. The Boeing 737-700 had 113 passengers on board. 

This is the fifth flight Southwest has launched to Vallarta from the United States in the past two years.  The other cities are Santa Anna and Orange County, California; Houston, Texas and  Denver, Colorado.
