How the US Consulate aids citizens in distress

The U.S. Consulate in Guadalajara is accustomed to assisting U.S. citizens who experience misfortunes while traveling or living in Mexico.

During their visit to Chapala last week, Consul General Robin Mathewman and American Citizen Services Unit chief Rachel Schofer offered advice and tips for people who find themselves in difficult situations.

pg3Victims of Crime: First report the incident to Mexican authorities who have the authority to investigate and prosecute crimes. The Consulate cannot assume those roles but will register crime reports that helps them gauge problems and interface with appropriate government agencies. In certain cases, pertinent information may be shared with the legal attaché or FBI agents. Consular staff can also provide guidance on victim rights and available assistance services. In addition, the Consulate can usually replace stolen passports within 24 hours, except on weekends.

Run-ins with the law:  People arrested in Mexico find themselves in the hands of the country’s law enforcement authorities. While consular officials cannot get foreigners out of jail, they can advise them of their legal rights and aid in communications with family members.

In case of death:  Notify the Consulate promptly for issuance of Death of an American Citizen Abroad certificate. In many cases notification is provided by a hospital, friend or neighbor of the deceased. It is important for the living to prepare an end game in advance. Draw up separate wills for the disposition of assets held in Mexico and abroad. Make sure someone of confidence understands your last wishes and knows how to contact next of kin who will be responsible for handling personal matters.  Making funeral arrangements ahead of time is extremely helpful to survivors who may face dealing with unfamiliar Mexican red tape while coping with grief.

Illness: Similar provisions are recommended in case you should suffer an accident or a debilitating ailment. A close friend and family member needs to know what to do to assure you get the best medical care possible.

Search the Consulate website for reference to voluntarily registered lawyers, doctors, hospitals and ambulance services. Keep in mind that the Consulate does not vouch for professional abilities or integrity of those listed as an information resource.
