Guadalajara institutions of higher education – the Instituto Tecnológico y de Estudios Superiores de Occidente (ITESO) and the Universidad de Guadalajara (UdG), the latter in collaboration with the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) – have made public two promising inventions aimed at ameliorating the virus pandemic.
It may be summertime, and the collaborators, including higher-level students, may have to meet remotely, but that has not stopped them from bringing the two innovative products to advanced stages of development: a transparent medical mask and a phone app to identify Covid-19 via recordings of a person’s cough.
The mask, developed by professor Miguel Huerta and his students of engineering and industrial design at the Jesuit-run ITESO, is perhaps the more straightforward of the two projects.
“The mask idea began two months ago in our class, Projects of Professional Application,” said Cesar Velarde. “With our professor, we analyze current problems in society and design solutions. We saw Covid as an opportunity to help.”
