Letters to the Editor – June 20, 2015

Dear Sir,

Congratulations to Sheryl Malin for her article in the June 13 edition. I signed her petition and hope many readers will. I, too, elected to reject the usual cut and burn recommendation of a U.S.-trained doctor.

Instead, on the internet, I researched alternative possibilities to get rid of a Stage 2 cancer in the bladder. This was five years ago and two years ago an ultrasound verified that it is gone. On recommendation of a friend with multiple sclerosis who had overcome breast cancer, I went to the Hoxey Bio Medical Center in Tijuana. In general, it is a good idea to be willing to let go of fixed ideas about eating certain foods, smoking and drinking alcohol.

Dear Sir,

Yesterday I heard a woman chastise a foreign man because his dog relieved itself in front of El Torito. She was in the right, but I wanted to tell her, “Be careful! Look at my face, I was also in the right.”

On Saturday at approximately 3 p.m., as I was leaving Farmacia Guadalajara, I was almost run into by a foreign man on a motorcycle on the sidewalk. After exchanging words – his obscene – I left in my car. While stopped at the red light in front of Walmart, seemingly out of nowhere he appeared at the driver’s window of my car with a rock in his hand and proceeded to hit me with it in my left eye.

I have severe bruising of my face and compromised vision in my left eye. The police came and took a report and I have filed a denuncia.  I have willing witnesses, but only a partial plate number: 1GTUT …

I’d like to warn others that among the foreign community here not all are good people.  After living 20 years in Mexico without incident, imagine being assaulted by another expatriate!

Dear Sir,

Late on the afternoon of June 10, the alarm was sounded at Villa Infantil as a large fire just south of the half-finished dyke and security wall bore down on the facility.

Thankfully, emergency drills rehearsed regularly by the children and staff paid off, as everyone reported safely at the pre-arranged meeting point.

As the flames rose higher and smoke engulfed the  property, the children held on dearly to the skirts of the sisters and their helpers.

A prayer was offered as the local bomberos arrived to tackle the fire.  Thankfully, the fire was brought under control and life soon returned to normal.

The director of the Villa thanks everyone who has contributed to the building of the first half of the dyke and security wall. It was largely thanks to the wall that the flames of the fire were kept away from the buildings.  But its completion is now a top priority,  since recently a group of intruders jumped over the dyke where the wall is not completed while the sisters and children were at Sunday Mass.  Thankfully, the groundsman was at home and chased them off the property.

After reviewing three quotes to complete the dyke and security wall, we are faced with raising around 250,000 pesos.  There are 83 panels of concrete block wall to complete.  Each panel will cost 3,000 pesos.  We are planning a plaque to be placed on the wall with the names of those who are able to sponsor a complete panel.
