Local golfer honored in New York for ‘legendary’ career

Tapatio golfer Lorena Ochoa was honored at the 27th edition of the annual “Great Sports Legends Dinner” in  New York on Monday.

Hosted by the Buoniconti family at the Waldorf Astoria, the event paid tribute to sports icons and philanthropic heroes, raising nearly 18 million dollars on the night for the Buoniconti Fund to Cure Paralysis. The annual gala has now raised over 90 million dollars since its inception in 1985.

Ochoa, the number one female golfer in the world for 157 consecutive weeks, was honored alongside four-time NBA champion Shaquille O’Neal, among others.

Although retired from professional golf, she will pick up the clubs again to play in the Lorena Ochoa Invitational, an annual LPGA tournament she hosts at Guadalajara’s Country Club in November.

Away from golf, Ochoa is heavily focused on charity work. The Lorena Ochoa Foundation supports 250 underprivileged students at La Barranca, a primary school she established in Guadalajara.
