Chivas prevail in ‘Super Clasico’

Local soccer club Chivas de Guadalajara ended a poor run of form with a 3-1 win over bitter rival Club America in Mexico’s “Super Clasico” on Saturday.

Over 90,000 fans packed the Estadio Azteca in Mexico City to watch the biggest event in Mexico’s sporting calendar.

Olympic gold medalist Marco Fabian put Chivas ahead after 35 minutes but within five minutes America drew level. Two second-half goals from new signing Rafael Marquez Lugo saw Chivas claim an unlikely three points.

Chivas had been struggling this season under new Dutch coach John van’t Schip but Saturday’s win, combined with a victory over Apertura 2011 champions Tigres last Wednesday, has seen them climb to within a point of the playoff places.

Chivas owner Jorge Vergara thanked the fans for their “patience and support” via Twitter after the game, adding that his Dutch coaching staff are “proving their capabilities.”
