Top waterskiers to battle for world title at Boca Laguna

Lakeside’s Boca Laguna ski club will host the World Waterski Championship from November 17 through 22.

The event is organized by the International Water Ski Federation (IWSF). The competition will draw 160 water sport athletes from 32 nations.

The tournament kicks off Monday, November 16 with an inaugural parade in the heart of downtown Chapala, scheduled to start at 7 p.m.

The championship will comprise contests in three disciplines: tricks, slalom and jumping.  Preliminary rounds are set for Tuesday through Friday, with finals on Saturday and Sunday. The action will run from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily, except for Thursday when competition will be held back until 1 p.m., following the IWSF World Congress meeting.

The public is welcome to attend and watch these athletes show their high-drama stuff. Entrance to the preferential zone on the west bank of Boca Laguna’s man-made lake will cost 50 pesos per adult, with children admitted at no charge on Tuesday through Thursday; rates go up to 100 pesos for adults and 50 for children on the last three days.

Admission to the open field on the opposite bank will be free for adults Tuesday through Thursday, and go for 50 pesos a head Friday through Sunday, with kids coming in free all week. Ample parking will be available in a nearby farming field.

Boca Laguna is located approximately four kilometers east of Chapala, a short distance beyond the turn-off to Santa Cruz de la Soledad.
