Lorena Ochoa to be inducted into Golf Hall of Fame

The World Golf Hall of Fame and Museum announced Tuesday that its 2017 Induction Class will include Lorena Ochoa, the stellar Guadalajara-born golfer who retired in 2010 at age of 28 to start a family.

Two-time major winner Ochoa was the top-ranked female golfer in the world for 158 consecutive weeks from April 2007 to May 2010.  Her retirement from the LPGA Tour while she was at the top of her game stunned many of her colleagues but she insisted that it was a move she had always planned for.

Others in the 2017 Hall of Fame class are 2016 Ryder Cup captain Davis Love, 1991 Masters Champion Ian Woosnam, four-time LPGA major winner Meg Mallon and late golf commentator Henry Longhurst.

“Thank you for this honor. Being a part of this group and being Mexican fills me with pride,” Ochoa tweeted after the announcement.

Mexican President Enrique Peña Nieto also tweeted his congratulations.

Ochoa lives in Mexico City with her husband, Andrés Conesa, the CEO of Aeromexico, and her two children. From November 10-13 she will host the LPGA Lorena Ochoa Invitational at the Club de Golf Mexico featuring the world’s top 30 female golfers.  In a recent interview, Ochoa did not rule out returning the event to its original home, the Guadalajara Country Club, when the deal with the LPGA is renewed for 2018.
