Chivas scrape past Toronto to lift title

Thousands of soccer fans celebrated wildly Wednesday evening as the Guadalajara Chivas won the CONCACAF Champions League, defeating Toronto FC 4-2 in a penalty kick thriller.

The Chivas – the only team in the country’s top professional tier to have an all Mexican roster – will play for the first time in the prestigious World Club Championships in the United Arab Emirates in December.

Toronto came out 2-1 winners on the night in a pulsating end-to-end game at the Chivas’ Akron Stadium. The aggregate result, 3-3 over two legs, meant the winner had to be decided on penalty kicks.

This was the 13th consecutive victory in the competition for a Mexican team. The Chivas last won the crown in 1963.
