Astros clinch basketball title

The Astros de Jalisco were crowned champions of the Cibacopa (Pacific Coast Basketball Circuit) Monday after defeating the Rayos de Hermosillo 91-87 in the sixth game of the final series.

The Astros de Jalisco franchise, which also plays in the top-tier National Professional Basketball League (LNBP), has consistently outperformed its rivals in its first season in the Cibacopa tournament, although the Rayos provided a stern test for the Guadalajara-based team.

The Astros have several experienced U.S. players among its ranks, and all came up with the goods on Monday evening in front of a full home stadium. Javion Blake led the way with 25 points (12 in the fourth quarter), while Matthew Stainbrook chipped in with 17 points and 12 rebounds. Blake also earned himself the series’ MVP award.

The Astros become the third professional men’s sports team in Guadalajara with a title to their name. The Charros are the current champions of baseball’s Mexican Pacific League, while Atlas hold the Liga Mx soccer crown.
