Mexico confirmed as world’s second-best diving nation

The Mexican national anthem was proudly played twice at the World Aquatics Diving World Cup, held last weekend in Guadalajara.

With two gold and four silver medals, Mexican divers secured second place in the final medal table, trailing behind powerhouse China, whose divers won gold in all the other events.

Between them, China and Mexico won 18 of the 27 medals up for grabs in the nine men’s and women’s event.

The standout performers for Mexico were Randal Willars Valdez, who won the gold in the men’s 10-meter individual platform, and Osmar Olvera and Juan Manuel Celaya, who triumphed in the men’s synchronized 3-meter springboard.

Rommel Pacheco Marrufo, director general of the National Commission for Physical Culture and Sports (CONADE), called Mexico’s best-ever performance at a Diving World Cup “a historic result.”

Bright future

The future of Mexican diving, particularly in the men’s events, looks promising. Willars, 22, is considered one of Mexico’s brightest diving prospects. He placed 4th in the men’s 10m synchronized platform event at the 2024 Olympics, competing with Kevin Berlín. Olvera, 20, and Celaya, 26, were also medalists in Paris, earning silver in the synchronized 3-meter springboard, with Olvera adding a bronze in the individual 3-meter springboard.
