Local Liga Mx soccer team Atlas and the second-tier Leones Negros of the Universidad de Guadalajara (UdeG) will soon share a brand new home.
After weeks of speculation, plans were revealed last week for a new 40,000-seat stadium to be built at the university’s Belenes complex in Zapopan, a multifunctional venue that will host both clubs’ matches, as well as cultural and entertainment events.
The announcement was made by Grupo PRODI President and Atlas owner José Miguel Bejos, Leones Negros President Alberto Castellanos, and representatives from Populous, the architectural firm behind the project.
Grupo PRODI will finance the entire cost of the stadium, estimated at five billion pesos (US$274 million), with no public funds involved, Bejos said. Under the agreement, UdeG will retain ownership of the land and hold a 20 percent stake in the project.
