Cirque du Soleil offers 5 shows at VFG Arena

Canadian circus arts troupe Cirque Du Soleil returns to Guadalajara to present five performances of its acclaimed touring production, “Corteo,” between Thursday, September 28 and Sunday, October 1.

pg8aThe presentations will take place at the VFG Arena, located midway on the Guadalajara and Chapala highway, approximately 28 kilometers from Guadalajara centro and 22 kilometers from Chapala.

Cirque Du Soleil debuted Corteo in 2005, earning complimentary reviews. The Toronto Sun found the show “brilliant” but the Oakland Tribune concluded that it merely “settles for being very good”

Corteo, which means “cortege” in Italian, is a joyous procession, a festive parade imagined by a clown. The show brings together the passion of the actor with the grace and power of the acrobat to plunge the audience into a theatrical world of fun, comedy and spontaneity situated in a mysterious space between heaven and earth.

Says the Cirque website: “The clown pictures his own funeral taking place in a carnival atmosphere, watched over by quietly caring angels. Juxtaposing the large with the small, the ridiculous with the tragic and the magic of perfection with the charm of imperfection, the show highlights the strength and fragility of the clown, as well as his wisdom and kindness, to illustrate the portion of humanity that is within each of us. The music, by turns lyrical and playful, carries Corteo through a timeless celebration in which illusion teases reality.”

Corteo was partly inspired by the painting “The Grand Parade: Portrait of the Artist as Clown” on display at the National Gallery of Canada, and the movie “I Clowns” directed by Federico Fellini.

Tickets for Corteo went on sale through Ticketmaster as of August 28.

The performances will be on Thursday, September 28 and Friday, September 29, at 9 p.m.; Saturday, September 30, at 5 and 9 p.m.; and Sunday, October 1, at 1 and 5 p.m.
