Nestle embarks on new venture

Swiss food giant Nestle has laid the first stone of its planned 350-million-dollar plant in Ocotlan on the western shores of Lake Chapala.

Nestle’s fifth facility in the state of Jalisco will employ 350 people when finished in 2016, company executives said this week.

The plant will produce infant milk formula, much of it for export to Latin America and the Caribbean.

Nestle opened its first plant in Jalisco in 1935 and employs 16,000 people at its 14 plants located throughout Mexico.

The Ocotlan plant will feature solar heating, wastewater and rainwater recovery and state-of-the-art energy saving of 38 percent compared with more traditional facilities.

Nestle generates sales of around 4.5 billion pesos annually in Jalisco.
