A new bicycle lane is already open for the city’s growing number of cyclists on Avenida Washington. But Guadalajara City Hall might have jumped the gun on the project.
The State Transportation Department (SVT) is still reviewing the plan, and finding it, in some cases, wanting. Some things on which they have already commented:
- The posts that mark the lane are at the wrong angle – they don’t properly reflect light for motorists’ visibility.
- Several bus stops spill right into the bicycle lane, possibly leading to either a collision of bicycle and pedestrian traffic, or a blocking of the lane.
- Some of the plans for the next phase of the project call for two-way bicycle lanes on Calle España, as on Washington, despite the fact that España is currently one-way. Many area residents and businesses are upset at the idea of modifying the function of the street.
The SVT expects to have a report and recommendations ready Monday, January 8.
