Substitute Guadalajara Mayor Francisco Ayon declared pop singer Elton John a “Distinguished Guest” of the city prior to his February 24 concert at the Omnilife Stadium.
Around 18,000 fans attended the concert that was billed as a celebration of world peace.
Ayon praised the British singer for his “brilliant and successful musical career” and “defense of the rights of people suffering from AIDS around the world.”
Although the stadium was well below its capacity, John performed energetically for almost two hours, delighting the enthusiastic audience with many of his biggest hits, including “Philadelphia Freedom, “Tiny Dancer” and “Saturday Night’s Alright for Fighting.”
