Piano prodigy steps into limelight

Here’s a name we will surely be hearing more about in the future.

Daniela Liebman, a nine-year-old Guadalajara-born piano prodigy, received standing ovations at the Teatro Degollado last weekend after playing with the Jalisco Philharmonic Orchestra (JPO) in the second series of concerts of the Winter/Spring season.  The confident young musician was conducted by her professor Anatoly Zatin, who teaches at the music department at the University of Colima.

Liebman, who comes from a family of musicians, began her music studies at the age of three. By the time she was eight she had already turned professional and participated in national and international music competitions.

Her rapid progression led to further appearances at competitions and festivals in Dallas, Texas; Milan, Italy and Madrid, Spain.

In April, Liebman will travel to Saint Petersburg, Russia to take part in festivities commemorating the 80th anniversary of Sergei Slonimsky, one of that nation’s most renowned contemporary composers. She will also be participating in the Russian International Music Competition in San Jose, California in June.

During last weekend’s two concerts, Liebman  performed Mozart’s “Piano Concerto No. 8.”
