The three-day commemoration has been a tradition in this Tlaquepaque suburb for 200 years. Passion Plays are also held in other parts of Mexico, including Ajijic, where the action culminates with a simulated Crucifixion on Good Friday (April 6). The Friday presentation starts in the Ajijic church atrium around 11 a.m. and usually draws a large crowd that assembles early in the morning. The aim of these events is to preserve a tradition of palpable religious instruction rather than provide entertainment.
