Pet Help seeks ‘amigos’ for three injured metro-area animals

“When we decide to go forward with some cases instead of putting them to sleep,” said Maricarmen Portilla, “it’s because we know they can have a good quality of life and their character is right for living with a family.” Portilla  is one of the group Pet Help’s founders. “Only a very small group of rescued animals are able to get such opportunities,” she stressed.

This week Portilla was searching for funds and adoptive families for an injured male kitten named Feliz and two female dogs, Canela and Laika. All are recovering or recovered from severe injuries and will continue to have optimistic prospects if individuals can be found to further aid them.

Feliz the cat was rescued with a mangled front leg and taken to a Zapopan veterinarian who amputated the leg but gave Feliz terrible post-operative attention — no antibiotics or painkillers. A Pet Help member then rescued the kitten from the vet. He was suffering from fever, pain and infection. Now, after appropriate treatment, “he is recuperating satisfactorily and gaining weight,” said Portilla.

“He is in a good mood now and is a friendly, sociable and grateful cat,” she reported. She is seeking funds to help defray costs of Feliz’s past and future treatment, which amount to about  2,000 pesos. Anyone wishing to help may contact Portilla so she can provide bank account information.

Canela is a brown, short haired female dog who is recovering after another sad story. She was found fending off hungry ants on a sidewalk where she lay unable to move after being hit by a car and suffering a broken hip and leg, which are now mending.

Portilla also is seeking a home for Laika, a beige, short haired female who is totally recovered after having a rear leg amputated. “She’s an adorable, loving homebody who gets along well with other dogs,” Portilla said. “But she still needs a family.”
