According to the police report, the aggressor was a man wearing an orange shirt who probably escaped on a motorcycle.
Jalisco Attorney General Tomas Coronado said the motive of the attack was unclear.
Ayon was not at his home in Colonia Lomas del Country when the incident occurred but arrived at the scene only minutes later. The injured police officer was treated for shrapnel wounds to his leg.
In a press conference the following day, Ayon said the attack was a consequence of the generalized climate of violence in the nation. He dismissed suggestions that it was related to changes that he has made within the local police department since March, when he took over as mayor from Aristoteles Sandoval, the winner of the July 1 election for governor of Jalisco.
Ayon said he would consider changing his address after consulting with his family.
A new mayor will be sworn in October 1.
