New licenses, appointment times at Transito

Diego Monraz Villaseñor acquainted the local media with the license at a press conference this week, at the same time as announcing a new system allowing drivers to make appointments on the Internet to obtain or renew licenses.

The new licenses contain a chip with facial recognition and digital fingerprint technology. They will not, however, contain information on previous traffic violations, a feature Monraz said could be introduced in the near future.  State traffic officials will not be issued with portable devices that are able to read the chips on the cards.

Monraz said he hoped the incoming state legislature would authorize the system used in many other counties, whereby points accumulated for traffic infractions can lead to the suspension of a motorist’s license.

The new Internet-based appointments service will begin on Tuesday, September 18 and at first only be available at the SVT head office on Avenida Circunvalacion in Guadalajara.  Appointment times can be fixed by logging into http://citas.jalisco.gob.mx/Vialidad and clicking on the “Registrate” button.

Appointments can be made with a minimum of 24 hours in advance and a maximum of three days.  According to the SVT, the new system will reduce  the time needed for renewing a license to between 15 and 30 minutes, and to 40 minutes for a new license.   The cost of a new license remains the same, at 435 pesos.
