Machines go quiet at Kodak plant

Having announced the closure of its Guadalajara plant earlier this year, Kodak has now ceased production and begun releasing its employees from the facilities on Avenida Mariano Otero.

Around 200 staff were laid off in the first two weeks of November, with another 150 due to have left by the end of the month.

Jalisco Department of Employment and Social Planning (STPS) will attempt to relocate the former Kodak workers to other companies, in collaboration with the National Employment Service (SNE), which recently organized a job fair at the Kodak plant, attended by companies such as Sanmina, Urrea and Carestream Health.

The remaining administrative personnel, who comprised around half of Kodak’s staff in Zapopan, will continue in the employ of the erstwhile film giant.

Having filed for bankruptcy on January 19, citing around 1.7 billion dollars of debt, Kodak announced the closure of its Zapopan plant the following month and in March found a buyer for the 450,000-square-meter facility. Few details have been released but the property was valued at around 150 to 200 million dollars.

With the aim of raising at least another two million dollars, Kodak will auction off all its equipment and machinery in 640 lots on December 6 and 7.
