Mild winter predicted but with more smog

While the days and nights are certainly turning colder, meteorologists in Jalisco are predicting this winter will be milder than in recent years.

According to Hermes Ramirez of the city’s Astronomy and Meteorology Institute, minimum temperatures in Guadalajara over the next few months will hover between 15 and 17 degrees centigrade, whereas in recent years the figure has oscillated between ten and 13 degrees.

The downside is that thermal inversions are likely to be more frequent and carry on for at least five months.

Thermal inversions are climatic  situations which occur when cold air and any pollution in the air gets trapped below a blanket of warm air.

Residents of Guadalajara are advised to refrain from outdoor exercise between 7 a.m. and 11 a.m. during early morning seasonal thermal inversions, says David Parra, director of the city’s air quality monitoring service.

This build up of smog – mostly ozone and other pollutants that are harmful to human health – can trigger state Environment Agency (Semades) air quality alerts.

To check hourly air quality in metropolitan area Guadalajara go to the Semades’ web page: http://siga.jalisco.gob.mx/aire.
