Expo Guadalajara unveils 30th birthday mural

Artist Karla de Lara’s new mural commemorating the 30th anniversary of Expo Guadalajara, the city’s trade show and conference center, was inaugurated Thursday.

The work graces the entrance of the facility and includes representations of some of the city’s most famous landmarks, including the cathedral, the Minerva statue and the yellow Millennium arches.

The work is titled “30 añõs” and, according to the artist, is the largest mural ever created in the Guadalajara metropolitan area.  It weighs five tons and took De Lara ten months to finish. She says she used 720 liters of paint, 400 liters of ink, 380 kilos of lacquer and 30 kilos of wax during the process.

De Lara was born in Guadalajara and studied at the University of Florence in Italy. She has exhibited her work in more than 35 countries. Among collectors of De Lara’s “pop” artwork listed on her website are President Enrique Peña Nieto, Madonna, Elton John, Leonardo Di Caprio, Carlos Slim and others.

An exhibition of her work will open at Galería Contraste 4 (Pablo Neruda 2715, Colonia Providencia) on May 25.
