The gradual hike in the price of avocados over the past two months is due to a seasonal drop in production, Jalisco Rural Development Secretary Hector Padilla has confirmed.
In recent weeks, the cost of avocados at some Guadalajara supermarkets and grocery stores rose to as high as 75 pesos a kilo.
Prices in the past week have lowered, however, with Soriana selling the fruit for 59.90 pesos a kilo on Wednesday; and Walmart for 66 pesos.
Padilla said consumers should start to see avocado prices decrease further over the next two months as production picks up.
The federal Consumer Protection Agency (Profeco) says it has been keeping an eye on the production and distribution chains of both avocados and limes (limones) to identify cases of price gouging.
