Jalisco Governor Aristoteles Sandoval has announced that Guadalajara’s planetarium will return to the city after several years of absence.
Sandoval and city hall have reportedly hammered out a deal which will see the science facility occupy the former headquarters of the ill-fated Student Federation of Guadalajara (FEG), not far from the planned Gloreita La Normal terminus of the third Tren Ligero line currently under construction.
In 2014, Guadalajara city hall sold 14 hectares of land to the state on land adjoining the northern periferico, upon which the Severo Diaz Galindo Planetarium stood (it has been closed for several years). The state government plans to construct a new home for the annual Fiestas de Octubre state fair on this site.
The location for the new planetarium has a gruesome past. In 2011, police uncovered bodies of murdered students buried on the property. The tragedy brought an end to FEG’s long and checkered history.
Thus far, neither the state nor the municipal government have released a construction time line for the project.
