World record attempt for breast cancer awareness

As part of Breast Cancer Awareness Month, Jalisco’s Health Department (SSJ) is supervising a Guinness record attempt for the construction of the world’s largest breast cancer awareness ribbon.

The effort will take place in conjunction with a parade running from the intersection of Vallarta and Chapultepec to the Glorieta Minerva, starting at 5 p.m. on Saturday, October 14,

The ribbon, however, won’t be made of silk but rather a fabric made of at least 17,000 human beings dressed in pink t-shirts.

The SSJ says 17 women die daily in Mexico of breast cancer.  They believe events like this raise awareness of the malady, perhaps impelling more women to take preventative measures.

People wishing to take part in the ribbon construction should register at cancerdelamujerjalisco.com and arrive at Vallarta and Chapultepec wearing a pink t-shirt at 4:30 p.m., Saturday. Attendees are welcome even if they are not participating the record attempt. Free mammograms will be available.  Women interested in this service are advised not to wear perfume, creams or deodorant.
