SOCCER PLAYERS CHARGED: Two men have been charged with homicide after a soccer player died in a fight that broke out during an amateur game being held at the plush Puerta de Hierro sports club last month.
The 20-year-old victim succumbed after being repeatedly hit by players from the opposing team following a disputed penalty call. Police arrested 12 players from the visiting team, Borbotones F.C., but only two were eventually charged. The two men, identified only as Jorge Alejandro and Abraham, will remain in jail for a maximum seven months, by which time a verdict must be reached, according to the country’s new justice system – el Codigo Nacional de Procedimientos Penales.
BANK ASSAULTS MORE VIOLENT: Attacks on bank customers in Guadalajara show no sign of letting up – and appear to be getting increasingly violent. In two incidents that occurred within the space of two hours Tuesday, assailants relieved clients of cash, while shooting their victims in the foot and leg. The first incident took place outside a bank on Niño Obrero in Colonia Chapalita, and the second close to the U.S. Consulate General in Colonia Americana. Investigators said it is likely the same two assailants carried out both attacks.
STEEP ALCOHOL FINES PROPOSED: A proposed new measure would levy severe punishments on clubs, restaurants and bars in the city caught serving alcohol after 2 a.m., the current legal cut-off. Establishments violating the limit on alcohol sales would face fines as high as 250,000 pesos. A recent study conducted by the Metropolitan Security Agency (AMS) revealed that alcohol is present during 58 percent of violent crimes committed between 2 and 7 a.m. Restaurateurs have objected to the proposal for what they see as its draconian nature and astronomic fines.
