Police officer commended for life-saving intervention

A state police officer assigned to Jalisco’s rapid response unit (FUR) has been recognized for his swift action in saving the life of a one-year-old infant.

pg5Jerson Geovanni Jair Rico, 24, administered emergency first-aid to a child in the driveway of a house in Guadalajara’s colonia Insurgentes who had fallen into a 20-liter bucket of water.

Jair Rico was feted Tuesday at the State Government Palace, where he received a certificate of commendation from Governor Aristoteles Sandoval, as well as a cheque for a month’s additional salary.

“At first when I saw the infant he was somewhat purple and I thought there was little I might be able to do for him,” the commended offer said.

Fortunately, Jair Rico had received CPR training at the Green Cross in Guadalajara and knew the correct steps to take for drowning victims.

When the child began to show signs of life, Jair Rico said he felt “a lot of emotion.”

The infant was quickly hospitalized and is reported to be stable.  Jair Rico has yet to visit him, but hopes to at some stage when he has recovered fully.

The young officer stressed the importance for all members of security forces in the state to have first-aid training.
