A moveable feast for the eyes

Despite boasting of several small parks and a few larger ones, Guadalajara is mainly defined by its intense urban-ness, a fact not lost on Marco Castro Cosío, the man behind Bus Roots, a company which, over the course of seven years, has built a fleet of food truck-sized vehicles with verdant gardens for rooftops.

Why, you ask?

“The basic idea is the installation of gardens on top of vehicles to generate more green space for cities, capture rain water, lower temperatures, capture carbon dioxide – and thus better adapt to climate change,” explained Castro, who is Tapatio by birth, but who studied at New York University, from whence came many of his ideas.

The Bus Roots concept, Castro says, will also include talks on gardening, sustainability, “green roofs,” and different technologies which may further his ideas.

If you’re interested in Bus Roots, Castro will be showing off his eco-scheme from 9 a.m., Saturday, November 18 to 6 p.m. the next day at the Centro Estatal de Fomento a la Lectura (Javier Mina 2418).  The vehicle will subsequently wander the streets for three weeks, locations to be communicated via Twitter (Jalisco’s Secretary of Culture @culturajalisco and @bussroots).
