Statue fever grips Guadalajara

Another piece in Guadalajara city hall’s polemic public sculpture project was unveiled this week in the Parque San Jacinto on Avenida Javier Mina in the eastern “Libertad” sector of the metropolitan area.

pg8aThe series by Jose Davila comprises a four separate stacks of geometric cubes, all fashioned from concrete and featuring natural rocks brought in from San Gabriel, a pueblo near Ciudad Guzman.

At the unveiling, the artist said he hoped the locals who use the park will “make the interactive sculptures their own.” He stressed that the work was a culmination of “years of labor” creating pieces that “have to do with gravity as their base point.”

A press release from Guadalajara city hall noted that the sculpture is in keeping with the philosophy of the park as a dynamic public space that is “one of the most active in the city.”

The work cost 5.4 million pesos ($US282,000), according to city hall.pg8b

Meanwhile, work continued this week on the installation of the “Arbol Adentro” sculpture on the new pedestrian walkway on Avenida Alcalde in the centro historico. Artist Jose Fors has been busy putting final touches to the half-human bronze head out of which a tree will sprout.
