City’s Jewish community asks for tolerance, peace

Guadalajara’s Jewish community last weekend marked Hanukkah with the Luces por la Paz (Lights for Peace) festival, held in the Capilla Tolsa of the Instituto Cultural Cabañas.

Representatives of different religions were invited to participate in the traditional candle-lighting ceremony.

The guests included representatives from the Catholic, Luz del Mundo, Anglican, Bahá’í, Hindu and Buddhist faiths, among others.

At the event, Rabbi Gustavo Geier offered a message of tolerance, and provided an historical synopsis of one of the Jewish faith’s most important annual festivities.

Traditional Jewish songs for the occasion were interpreted by the Coro Interconfesional.

After the ceremony, white doves and balloons were released into the night sky in the Cabañas’ large patio.
