State Library hosts King Tut exhibit

From March 23 to September 23, an exhibition of impeccably crafted facsimiles of items from the tomb of Egyptian pharaoh Tutankhamen will be on view at the “Juan Jose Arreola” Jalisco State Public Library.

pg6Since 1922, when British archeologist Howard Carter discovered a tomb of the ancient North African ruler, King Tut has practically been synonymous, together with Queen Cleopatra, with ancient Egypt.  Tut’s star rose even further in 1978 when a certain Steve Martin SNL skit took the United States by storm, re-introducing the iconic pharaoh to an amused public.

The exhibition will boast 170 objects, each faithfully reproduced from the originals – which are not allowed out of Egypt per the orders of the country’s Minister of Culture – by a team of artists in Tuscany, Italy.  The centerpiece is the by-now instantly recognizable five-meter high sarcophagus, which archeologists presume to be the last resting place of King Tut.

Entrance to the exhibition will cost 70 pesos, or 50 pesos for students, teachers, children, seniors and employees of the University of Guadalajara. Children under six enter free.  Tickets can be purchased at the box office or online at conjuntodeartesescenicas.com.  The state library is located at Periferico Norte Manuel Gomez Morin 1695, Colonia Belenes.
