Mariachi musicians may soon be strumming their guitarrones and blasting away on their trumpets in Guadalajara’s famous Plaza Mariachi.
City hall and the plaza’s private concessionaire from a previous administration reached an agreement to hand the narrow plaza – located adjacent to the San Juan de Dios Market – back to municipal authorities. The city reportedly paid Gustavo Ruíz Velasco 13.75 million pesos to get him to drop his claim to the plaza. A renovation project is set to start before the plaza reopens to the public.
