The Irish Ambassador to Mexico and the country’s tourism minister took part in an (early) St. Patrick’s Day and Greening Day celebration in Guadalajara Sunday, March 10.
Barbara Jones and Brendan Griffin were joined by acting Guadalajara Mayor Enrique Ibarra and city dignitaries as several famous monuments were gloriously lit up in green. The Rotonda of Illustrious Jalisco Citizens, the Millennium Arches, the Minerva Glorieta and the Estampida (Horse Stampede) Glorieta were some of the monuments bathed in the traditional Irish color. Tourism Minister Griffin is the first government official from Ireland to visit Guadalajara. He highlighted the close relationship between the two countries and remarked on how far the city had grown in its relatively short history. The celebration continued with a performance of Irish dance by a local troupe.
St. Patrick’s Day is marked worldwide on Saturday, March 17.
Old Temple’s Bar (López Cotilla 1860), the city’s first Irish pub, celebrates St. Patrick’s Day Friday, March 16 and Saturday, March 17, with Irish dancing, green beer, Guinness, Jameson’s whiskey live music and promotions on drinks.
