Municipal kids’ museum to reopen to great expectations

A popular children’s museum, which went under the knife over a year ago, is nearly done being renovated, with its re-opening scheduled within a month.

Globo, Museo de la Niñez, whose aim is to “promote, explore, spread, document and live the culture of childhood,” was founded in 2000, inspired by the Reggio Emiliano educative paradigm, similar to the more famous Montessori method of child instruction.  While it is nominally a museum, the facility’s organizers stress the importance of children’s participation.  In line with this approach Globo makes use of workshops and forums to involve young people in a variety of self-actualizing activities.  In this sense the museum is much more interactive than a normal museum, more closely resembling an ongoing laboratory of workshops to develop children’s creative, problem-solving and cooperational capacities.

At the time of its closing in June 2016, the municipal-funded museum registered about 45,000 visitors per year.  Director Susana Aguilar hopes that the 18.7-million-peso facelift, which she says gives the space a more contemporary and scientific character, will result in greatly increased foot traffic.

Globe, Museo de la Niñez is located at the intersection of Analco and 5 de Febrero, near Parque Agua Azul.  So far, hours and ticket info are un-listed.
