Zapopan installs seismic monitoring stations

Seismic stations for the detection of earthquake-related activity are being installed around the Guadalajara metro area by University of Guadalajara scientists and the city of Zapopan.

They are expected to be operational by August.

“We have determined the existence of microseismic activity in the city, especially in Zapopan, for which we’re instilling a network of seismic stations,” explained Francisco Javier Nunez Cornu, director of Seismology at the Centro Universitario de la Costa. “The important thing to know isn’t when earthquakes will hit, but rather how strong they will be, and how to tailor construction to their potency.”

Several of the stations will be situated in the Bosque Primavera, the federally protected forest area to the west of Guadalajara, site of a volcanic caldera.
