After two years of work, the municipality of Tonala has finally inaugurated the Paseo Peatonal Guardianes de la Reina (Guardians of the Queen Pedestrian Walkway) in the center of the famed Guadalajara crafts suburb.
The 500-meter-long walkway features 272 artworks of various kinds, ranging in height from six centimeters to seven meters.
These public exhibits are on display on Avenida Tonalá, between Tonaltecas and Francisco I. Madero.
The final cost of the project, including the art pieces and related infrastructure, came to 123 million pesos ($US6.5 million).
The standout sculptures are the “guardians” representing the four elements: earth, fire, wind and water. There are another 45 sculptures of various sizes and materials, 170 “miniature” pieces and 25 “artistic benches.”
According to Mayor Sergio Chavez Dávalos, the aim of the project is to “strengthen Tonala’s tourist vocation” and convince visitors to Jalisco to spend more time in the Guadalajara metropolitan area.
