Dulces de la Rosa, the well-known local candy manufacturer, marked its 70th birthday last week by creating a new Guinness record for the largest marzipan ever concocted.
The disc-shaped peanut-flavored “mazapan” weighed in at a whopping 8,296 kilograms, beating out previous records set in Denmark and Syria, which were both made from almonds.
Around 100 employees from the Tlajomulco firm worked for three hours in the city center’s Plaza Fundadores creating the monster candy.
After they finished, hundreds of eager Tapatios lined up for free samples.
Dulces de la Rosa’s small, emblematic marzipan candies are produced in see-through packaging and weigh around 30 grams. They are a popular sweet treat hawked by street vendors in the metropolitan area.
Company President Enrique Michel Velasco said he was thrilled by the record and the effort made by his staff. His next goal, he said, is to create the world’s largest marshmallow, or bonbon as it is known in Spanish.
