Security a hot issue for city restaurants

Eateries affiliated to the local branch of the National Restaurant Chamber (Canirac) invest around ten percent of their profits in security measures to thwart criminals, the chamber’s president, Sergio Jaime Santos, said this week.

Santos reported that more than 300 assaults on restaurants have occurred in Guadalajara this year, many of them in the Chapultepec and Providencia gastronomic corridors.

In a recent assault on a upscale eatery located at Tomas V. Gomez and Morelos, gunmen kidnapped three diners, later leaving them on the city beltway (periferico) minus their belongings.

Most of the investment by restaurateurs has been in security cameras and guards.

Despite the alarming trend, Santos expects the restaurant sector in Jalisco to grow by about five percent his year.
