New look for historic city plaza

Work has started on resurfacing downtown Guadalajara’s historic Plaza de Armas, which faces the Palacio de Gobierno, to one side of the Metropolitan Cathedral.

Half of the plaza has been closed for the past two years as work on the underground section of the third Tren Ligero (subway) line continues.

Once completed, the revamped plaza will merge with the new pedestrian walkway of Avenida Alcalde, which will stretch a dozen blocks all the way to La Normal Glorieta.  Several entrances to the “Cathedral” Tren Ligero station will emerge in the area surrounding the plaza.

It is unclear whether the work will be finished before the Independence Day celebrations next month. Large crowds traditionally pack the plaza to hear the state governor issue Miguel Hidalgo’s famous “grito” (call to arms) from the balcony of the state palace on the night of September 15.
