Coming up at Amsoc

BOOK CLUB: The next English Book Club meeting will be Thursday, January 24, 10 a.m. at the American Society (Amsoc). Under discussion will be “Perfume: The Story of a Murderer”  by German author Patrick Suskind.

This 1985 literary historical fantasy novel explores the sense of smell and its relationship with the emotional meaning that scents may have.

FILM SCREENING: Following the Thursday, January 24 Amsoc luncheon, there will be a showing of “Roma,” the movie by Mexican director Alfonso Cuaron that recently won two Golden Globes. The showing will feature English subtitles.  The critically-acclaimed film is only available on Netflix, so Amsoc members who do not subscribe to the service can have a chance to see it.  There will be free popcorn.

DEMOCRATS ABROAD: At Amsoc on Sunday, January 27, 4:30 p.m., Democrats Abroad-Guadalajara will sponsor one of the latest five-star movies to come out this year.  In “BlacKkKlansman,” director Spike Lee goes back to the early 1970s to tell the story of Ron Stallworth (John David Washington), the first African-American detective to serve in the Colorado Springs Police Department. Determined to make a name for himself, Stallworth bravely sets out on a dangerous mission: infiltrate and expose the Ku Klux Klan. Says one critic: “The film explores the endless civil war roiling at the core of our society, more than ever ready to boil over – and to that end Lee pulls out all the stops: scathing satire, documentary footage, speechifying, genre elements, comedy, tragedy. He holds a mirror up to society, reflecting us back to ourselves.” A 40-peso donation includes popcorn and soda. Contact: This email address is being protected from spambots.
