‘Killer’ dogback home

“Pirata,” the pitbull that reportedly mauled to death an intruder at a house in Guadalajara’s Balcones de Oblatos neighborhood last month, has been returned to his owners.

Following the incident, the dog was kept in captivity for two weeks at the municipal Animal Control Center to ensure he was free of rabies and did not behave in an aggressive manner.  Officials will continue to monitor Pirata for any signs of aggression but no charges will be brought against his owners.

Chapalita revamp continues

The upgrade of Colonia Chapalita will restart in September with the revamp of the stretch of  Avenida Guadalupe running from the Chapalita Glorieta to Avenida Niño Obrero. This lively zone is filled with eateries and cafes and has become a traffic and parking nightmare in recent years.   Zapopan Mayor Pablo Lemus said the work will consist of widening the sidewalks and installing “ports” in front of the restaurants so that valet parking staff can operate without affecting the traffic flow.  Work was completed earlier in the year on a major overhaul of the Chapalita Glorieta.  The installation of wide speed bumps has reduced traffic speeds, and the glorieta is now much safer for pedestrians to negotiate.

That sinking feeling

A video of a band hired to entertain shoppers in Zapopan’s Plaza Patria last weekend has gone viral.  During a sudden rainstorm on Saturday, a piece of the mall’s roof became dislodged and water began pouring down into the plaza. So what did the quick-thinking band do? They began playing the theme song from the movie “Titantic” (“My heart will go on”), much to the amusement of shoppers.  Videos of the incident can be viewed on YouTube. Just type in  “Plaza Patria se inunda.” This is not the first time the mall has been flooded out.  More than 150 cars in the parking lot were damaged after a nearby canal overflowed and sent water pouring into the plaza last July.
