Crime blighting popular metro-area neighborhood

Following last weekend’s tragic incident (see story page one), increased police vigilance is urgently required in the Colonia Providencia restaurant zone, says Aldo de Anda, president of the local restaurant chamber.

Muggings, car thefts and other serious crimes are becoming far too commonplace in the popular gastronomic area, he says. While authorities have placed much attention on improving security in the Avenida Chapultepec bar/restaurant corridor, Providencia has been neglected, he says. De Anda urges Guadalajara city hall to beef up video surveillance, and says businesses are prepared to donate bicycles so that more officers can patrol the zone.
