Protest outside US consulate planned

“A Vigil to End Human Detention Camps” has been scheduled by the group Lights for Liberty outside the U.S. Consulate General in Guadalajara on Friday, July 12, 8:30 p.m.

The worldwide protest seeks to focus attention on the inhumane conditions faced by refugees in the United States.

According to organizers, a few speakers will share their thoughts before a candlelight moment of silence at 9 p.m., showing solidarity with those detained.

In its mission statement Lights for Liberty says, “We are a coalition of people, many of whom are mothers, dedicated to human rights and the fundamental principle behind democracy — that all human beings have a right to life, liberty and dignity.”

Some members of Democrats Abroad Guadalajara indicated they will participate in the event. The Lake Chapala chapter is organizing its own Lights for Liberty vigil at the Centro Laguna food court in Ajijic at the same time (see page 12).
