119 bags full of body parts unearthed in Primavera

An astonishing total of 119 bags containing dismembered body parts were dumped in a disused well on the grounds of an abandoned property in the small community of La Primavera in Zapopan.

Authorities began removing the plastic bags September 3 after receiving reports of foul smells, in addition to an anonymous tip-off. As each day passed, the excavators dug deeper and wider, revealing more and more bags with body parts.

The excavation concluded Wednesday after eight days of digging. Attorney General Macedonio Tamez said forensic experts have managed to piece together seven full corpses from the body parts and 13 partial corpses. In addition, he confirmed the discovery of two heads, two torsos and multiple other body parts.

Tamez said the bags found during the early part of the excavation had been dumped less than a week ago. The remainder of the bags contained human remains that had been decomposing for up to a month.  The police have not said whether the victims were slaughtered inside the property,  Authorities said the ownership of the property is still under investigation, and some reports suggest that given their size, the grounds could form part of the Primavera ejido (community farmland).

Thursday, a representative of Familias Unidas por Nuestros Desaparecidos en Jalisco  (Families United for Jalisco’s Disappeared) demanded that state authorities provide them with pertinent information about the discovery and allow them the opportunity to view the corpses for identification purposes.  If the state government denied their request, Guadalupe Aguilar said members of the group would stage a protest outside the offices of the Forensic Sciences Institute in Guadalajara.
